Creative Writing Mentor and Manuscript Appraisal.

BREAKING NEWS!! SUCCESS WITH UNDISCOVERED VOICES 2014

My mentee, Susan Sandercock, who worked with me last year on a redraft of her novel, Southend Loaded, is a Finalist in UNDISCOVERED VOICES 2014 :-

I approached Miriam for 1:1 mentoring for assistance with editing the first three chapters of my novel in the hope she could help me apply that elusive layer of sheen my writing needed for its birth into the big bad world.

Miriam is warm and encouraging; she wants you to succeed as much as you do. Working with Miriam felt like a partnership, whether discussing possible macro edits such as characterisation and repairing a poorly plot to micro edits such as tweaking sentence structures. The sessions were inspirational and professional.

After a few sessions, my first three chapters were trimmed, buffed and preened to perfection and ready for the outside world. I submitted to Undiscovered Voices and crossed my fingers.

Well...imagine my elation when I received a phone call to say I’d made the  final list! After years of hard work, my dream of getting my stories into the world is closer to being realised. And I have Miriam to thank for helping me in my journey.

I am an experienced writing mentor and manuscript appraiser, with significant successes in the past few years. Several participants have been longlisted and reached the final of novel competitions, including The Wingate Prize, Mslexia Novel Competition, 2013, and Undiscovered Voices, 2014. Other mentees have  completed full length manuscripts, poetry collections, autobiographies and short stories and have gone on to publish. Some have also been placed in poetry and short story competitions, as well as in magazines and journals.

I offer 1:1 mentoring.

I also offer manuscript appraisal, providing detailed reports to help the writer to take their work forward.

Adventures in Fiction

I am a mentor for the agency, Adventures in Fiction, appraising manuscripts and supporting writers.

Miriam's suggestions were practical and made such good sense, I found I could not stop once I started re-plotting. I'm excited by the ideas she helped me generate for improving the story...and have lost my fear of making major changes.

Feedback

My writing has improved because Miriam gives me the freedom to develop in my own way and at my own pace, yet she is full of ideas to stimulate the creative juices. She is constantly encouraging and a penetrative critic.

Miriam's input on Writing Dialogue was very helpful. I have looked at my characters in a new light and hope to finish my book this month. Her comments on my writing were concise, fair and yet encouraging.

Informative, practical, entertaining.I especially liked the exercise using my own characters. It helped me to gain a greater depth of my characters' personalities and provided the push I needed to move my story forward.

Miriam is full of enthusiasm and support. I would take any session of hers again in a heartbeat. Just give it a try- you won't regret it.

This opened up the door to so many different possibilities for character construction. To write about the opposite of yourself is obvious, but a rarely done task. Miriam Halahmy highlighted key points to get started at creating different characters. Focused and comprehensive.
